Ancient Seams
by Atarah Atkinson
Where two surfaces meet, something is always revealed. The joint running diagonally across this image — stone meeting ornate wallpaper, the seam between them exposed and worn — becomes a map of everything that has happened at this threshold over time. The rich pattern of the wallpaper, the pale geometry of the stone, the small blue mark that appears almost like a signature: none of it was composed in the traditional sense, and yet the image has the quality of a painting.
The seam is where breakdown begins, and also where the most honest information lives. What holds things together, and what happens at the edges of that holding — this is what the piece is really asking about.
